Mariah Carey Mourns the Loss of Her Mother and Sister on the Same Day: ‘My Heart Is Broken’

Mariah Carey is grappling with profound grief after losing both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, on the same day.

The iconic singer shared the heartbreaking news on Monday, revealing the tragic events that have left her devastated. “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Carey said in a somber statement.

She expressed gratitude for the time she spent with her mother in her final days, adding, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

According to the Times Union, Alison, who had been estranged from Carey for years, passed away at the age of 63 due to complications with her organ function after being in hospice care.

People Magazine was the first to report on the deaths and Carey’s statement.

Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer, was a significant influence on Mariah from a young age. In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer reflected on her mother’s role in shaping her musical journey. “I would sing little tunes around the house, to my mother’s delight. And she always encouraged me,” Carey wrote.

Patricia had been married to Alfred Roy Carey, Mariah’s father, before they divorced when the singer was just 3 years old. Mariah was raised primarily by her mother in Suffolk County, Long Island, following the divorce. Her father passed away in 2002 at the age of 72 from cancer.

Carey’s relationship with her mother and sister was complex and often fraught with tension, as detailed in her memoir. She described her bond with her mother as a tangled web of emotions, filled with “pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment.” Carey also recounted the challenges she faced with her sister, accusing her of placing her in dangerous situations during her childhood.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” Carey wrote in her memoir. “A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”

Despite their complicated relationship, Carey maintained contact with her mother, and in 2010, they even recorded a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for Carey’s second Christmas album.
